Wembley Stadium Fan Zone
ARX High Security 3kN Crowd-Loaded Fence System
Client: The Football Association
Location: Wembley Stadium, London
Project Timeline: Late 2022 – February 2024
ARX Security was approached by the Football Association (FA) to design and supply a high-security, temporary fence system for a new Fan Zone on the east concourse of Wembley Stadium. The system needed to support large crowds safely and be easily deployable without major civil works
Key Requirements
Surface-mounted design (minimal civil engineering)
Curved fence line following existing drainage
Wind load resilience (with branding cladding)
Crowd load rating of 3kN
Emergency blow-out gates (increased from 2 to 4)
Multiple pedestrian and 5m+ vehicle gates
Structural consideration for access tunnels below
Engineering & Design
Two initial proposals were developed—surface mount and semi-permanent. The surface-mount option was chosen for its flexibility. ARX collaborated with Thornton Tomasetti, who advised on necessary material upgrades to meet load ratings:
Central brace thickness increased from 1.5mm to 3mm
Additional bracing and concrete counterweights introduced
Following successful structural assessments and FA approval, a Purchase Order was issued.
Installation
Date: 8 February 2024
Challenges: Constant heavy rain, limited space near structures
Execution: Despite adverse weather, ARX and Event People completed the full fence installation across all elevations. Custom concrete placement and gate configurations were managed efficiently.
Outcome
The ARX High Security 3kN Crowd-Loaded Fence System was successfully installed and branded in time for the Carabao Cup Final on 28 February 2024 (Liverpool FC vs Chelsea FC).
