An unusual request for ‘TV show’ fencing
We received an unusual enquiry from our installation partner, Crowdguard. They received a request from a TV production company – Shine TV – to supply a suitable temporary fence for a secret TV project.
The fence was to be installed around the exercise yard of the de-commissioned Shrewsbury Prison, to reinstate the appearance of an operational facility.
With its robust construction, incorporating 358 ‘prison’ mesh, the ARX Security Fence was thought to be ideal. The appearance of the fence was complemented by its capacity to be installed with minimal ballast or bracing, providing the look of a permanent fence.
The fully surface-mounted installation was a further benefit as there could be no permanent fixings around the Grade II listed main building, which is now a tourist destination and used regularly as a filming location.
After studying initial drawings and specifications to establish feasibility, a full site survey was carried out to confirm the requirements of the client. An NDA had to be signed to maintain confidentiality.
Along with the standard fence panels and posts, some specialist panels were required to enable the installation. These were manufactured by adapting components from our sectional vehicle gate.
2 pedestrian gates were included in the deployment. One was installed at the outer corner of the yard with bespoke base plates, whilst the second secured a narrow access route between buildings. This second gate was fixed, on one side, to a wall mounted post attached to a recent extension building.
The specification was finalized with razor wire brackets around the top of the fence to create an authentic finish.
The full installation was carried out during a single day, in June, in brilliant mid-summer sunshine. The ARX Security and Crowdguard teams worked together to ensure that the fence, including the theatrical razor wire topping, was completed on schedule; and the TV production crew were delighted with the end result.
Following the installation, confidentiality had to be maintained until the show was transmitted.
Finally in November 2023, the Channel 4 reality show ‘Banged-Up’ was aired, featuring the ARX Security Fence.
